Things I Think About #22

Why should Robin be more like Batman?

I've pretty much accepted that kalinara is right, and DC is trying to make Tim Drake like Batman, thus suggesting Tim's the one that would take over for Bruce Wayne, on the slim chance that someday DC is actually willing to do that. But why would they go that way?

I know Tim is trying his hardest to do what's necessary to be the good partner for Batman, but I thought the whole reason he tried to become Robin in the first place was because he was worried Batman was going off the deep end, and required someone less dark to keep him balanced. If Tim is becoming just like Batman, then HOW IN THE HELL IS HE GOING TO KEEP HIM BALANCED?!

Is he betting that if there's a teenager present Batman will restrain himself? Is he trying reverse psychology, becoming dark to force Bruce to look at who he is, and make appropriate changes when he sees the deep emotional scarring he's inflicting on Tim?

I think I liked it better when Tim was pissed at Batman for giving his secret identity away to Spoiler. He stayed away from him, made his own decisions, did things his own way. Oh well, that train has left the station.

Personally, it always seemed to me that part of the point of Tim-as-Robin was that he was rather ill-suited to it. In fact, I've always thought that given their temperaments and effects on Bruce, maybe Tim and Cass should have switched costumes. :-) He should be the bat, she should be the Robin.

Anyway from the hints/solicits for OYL, it sounds like Tim's going to be more independent again, which sounds like it'll be cool. :-)

I think that while Tim's circumstances have become more similar to Bruce's that doesn't mean that he will or is becoming just like Batman. If anything I think it provides and even better contrast to Bruce Wayne if Tim can maintain a social life and not just be an avenger of the night. From reading Detective Comics OYL it would seem that Tim is filling the Robin role in typical fashion; he is the humanity in the duo that reflects what Bruce works so hard to mask.

kali: Well independent is good. I hope it includes some lightheartedness, and some friends for Tim.

jim: If Tim can maintain a social life in the way the Wayne doesn't that would be a good contrast, but as I've complained/bitched about in earlier posts, DC took away Tim's life by killing his dad, girlfriend, potential replacment girlfriend (who returned as potential villain), and moving him to a new town where Tim did nothing except be Robin, apparently.

If DC is going to correct that, excellent.

Point, Mr. Pitt. Until the next match.
