What's Thanagarian For Crom?

Question: Has Hawkman ever been written a Space Conan? Flying through space, drinking fortified space liquor, smashing space villains with his space mace, getting down to business with space wenches, that sort of thing? I recall Geoff Johns' Hawkman had a fairly violent streak in him, at least some of the time, but I'm not sure whether it was Conanesque, or if he had the other aspects going on.

If so, how well did it go? If it went well, why'd they stop? If it didn't go well, why*? If they haven't tried it yet, do you think it would be worth considering?

* My guess would be Hawkman not setting aside enough time for lovin'.

Actually, Johns' Hawkman was more angry old man Hawkman.

But Winged-Space-Conan is fantastic. I would totally read that book.

The original Truman/Alcatena Hawkworld miniseries was the closest the concept got to SPACE! CONAN! And then only partially.

I highly recommend that series, too. It saddens me that Johns' sad sack "if only she'd come around" Carter Hall is the kind of Hawkman younger generations have grown up with.

I'm assuming that "Seven Hells!" is the Thanagarian version of "Crom!"

jason: Oh, so johns wrote crotchety hawkman.

"Durn kids and their newfangled zap powers! In my day we beat villains with blunt objects, like this! *Caves in random thug's skull*"

dan coyle: I may have to go looking for this miniseries then. It lead into the Ostrander/Truman ongoing that got kind of messed up from trying to fit all the previous hawkstuff in someway, somehow, right?

sallyp: Ah, of course, you're right! I can't believe I didn't think of that.

Oh yeah, if you haven't read the original Hawk World mini, go seek it out. Truman's art is just beautiful.

Calvin: Yes. Truman conceived it as a new Hawkman: Year One type story; the timeframe is not specific in those three issues.

However, for whatever reason editorial decided when the Hawkworld ongoing launched that it had "just happened" and that somehow, the rest of the Hawkman/Hawkgirl stories in the post-crisis years had to be explained away.

And then it got even worse after Zero Hour...

And then it got slightly better with Johns...

And now Starlin's upending it all again!
