Plot: The attempts on Fiona's life are escalating. Now she has two life-sentence serving murderers after her. Even for Fiona, that's a tall task. If the Sisters cells were tossed, there are enough weapons there to get them thrown in the hole for months, and Ayn could arrange for a shakedown of the entire cell block. But she'd lose all her goods, so she's not eager to do so. Unless Fiona's friends on the outside can retrieve a package from Ayn's lousy ex-husband. Well, that sounds easy enough. I mean, with Mike, Sam, and Jesse, some dirtball isn't going to be much trouble.
Oh, but the boys are busy tracking down that crooked guard, Sturges, only to have several unpleasant things happen. One, Sturges is dead. Two, he was killed by Rebecca, Anson's mole on Michael's team from the Season 5 finale. Three, Rebecca's still there. Four, make was there, because she just left with Sam as a hostage. So while Sam tries to slow Rebecca down (or talk her out of this), Jesse and Michael are in hot pursuit. Unfortunately, seeing as Rebecca shot up the Charger's engine, their pursuit ain't so hot. All of which leaves Madeline trying to recover Ayn's package on her own. Too bad Ayn's ex doesn't treat the elderly with much respect.
Too bad for him, I mean, since Michael pays him a visit at the end. Yes, Sam was saved, after much dallying about with helicopters, fuel trucks, meth labs, swamp boats and a backpack full of C-4. All Michael had to promise was to find Rebecca's brother to keep him safe from Anson, and do it without alerting the CIA.
The Players: Rebecca (Calling the Shots), Ayn (Prison Entrepreneur)
Quote of the Episode: Ayn - 'Oh sorry, criminal. Not this time. Not with those two involved. I might die in prison, but I vastly prefer it be of natural causes.'
Does Fiona blow anything up? No! Geez, she's in prison, what are you thinking?
Sam Axe Drink Count: 0 (1 overall).
Sam Getting Hit Count: 2 (4 overall).
Michael's Fake Laugh Count: 0 (0 overall).
Other: Michael's alias this week was "Derek Huber", FAA.
Intellectually, I know I shouldn't approve of Michael's brutality towards Ayn's ex. He punched the guy, slammed his head into a fridge door 3 times (and the third time was just for the hell of it), and broke his arm (or separated his shoulder, something like that). But the guy hit Maddy, scared the crap out of her, and it's to keep Fiona alive, so I don't really mind that much. Madeline being possibly even more spooked by Michael than she was by the ex was a nice touch.
It's like with Fiona gone, Michael's lost all emotional equilibrium. Fiona is normally the one who freely gives vent to her emotions, or wants to, and Michael has to try and rein her in. Which means he has to keep his own feelings under wraps, too. With her gone, he can't seem to manage that any more. I wondering if it's self-doubt. Anson said Michael was compelled to try and save everyone, and until he ran into Anson, Mike had largely pulled it off. But he couldn't save Fi, and he's a little shook. I think he's wondering if he can keep his new promise to her, that he'll get her out of prison, since he couldn't keep the previous one (that he'd keep her out).
At any rate, he's clearly under strain. Through most of the episode, he reminds me of how I get some times. Occasionally, there will be things that irritate, and I can't get past them. Then every subsequent thing irritates me a little more, and they keep building until I'm walking around constantly pissed off and on the verge of snapping at everyone. Michael's like that. Not just in how he treats the ex, but in the cold manner he speaks to Maddy in the run-up to it, and towards Jesse as they chase Rebecca. He's frustrated because things aren't working, his friends are in danger, and even when he starts to win on one front (rescuing Sam/convincing Rebecca to switch sides), he's losing on another (not getting the package to the prison by the deadline).
I considered mentioning this last week, but I wanted to focus more on Pearce, so I'll bring it up now. I like how Ayn, and especially Fi, look. Last week in particular, I thought Fiona looked very greasy, generally much less healthy than she normally does. They both had dark circles under their eyes. In general, they're showing the effects of living in a stressful, less than optimal location. Though it's hard for me to tell that Fiona's not eating enough as Michael says. Gabrielle Anwar is pretty skinny most of the time, so I can't tell much of a difference. I do wonder if she should look paler. I know she would get a lot of sun before she went to prison. Maybe that hasn't worn off yet?
