Junk Post, Junk Post

That's right, it's a random junk post!

- For those of you that might be interested, I survived that cookie gathering ordeal I described in my Baten Kaitos: Origins review from Sunday (I'm too lazy to actually make the link). It wasn't difficult, probably because I knew what to do, but it was really tedious. Why do game designers put tedious stuff like that in their games? I'm not playing to gather cookies for lazy idiots, and fun times for boring professors, I want to follow the story of islands in the sky and periodically kill monsters!

- The Shield season premiere was pretty good, though I'm still not sold on that one kinda rookie officer that Dutch Boy is mentoring. She just seems to be tacked on as the fall girl, the one who makes mistakes or acts unprofessionally and gets called on it by Julien. Of course, that used to be Julien's role, so I guess it's a passing of the torch situation. I especially enjoy that Shane seems to have a Cassandra Cain-esque "death as atonement" thing going now, as well he should. I'm sure criminals will kill him more politely than Vic would. It's fun to watch Kavanaugh (played by Oscar winner Forrest Whitaker) resort to Vic Mackey tactics, to bring down Vic Mackey. Of course, Vic isn't likely to waste anymore time making Kavanuagh look unbalanced, when he could just shoot him.

- My one beef with the season premiere was that Vic didn't pistol-whip anyone. For some reason, I was certain Vic was so over the edge he'd smack someone around with his firearm, but no such luck. Little disappointing.

- The Initiative #1. All I want to say about this book is this - I don't like that "New Warriors" is an insult now. I know, post-Civil War, the Warriors are considered to be lousy heroes and all, and so of course nobody wants to be a New Warrior (except me, and probably Spencer Carnage), but I... don't... care. I've never heard of this Gauntlet jackass, and I don't think Hank Pym has any ground to stand on criticizing the Warriors for being "cocky" or "untrained". Man, I really wish Pym had bought it in Disassembled.

I feel better. Night.

I thought they might actually be rehabilitating Pym, but alas not.

I'll be a New Warrior too! I even loved the Skottie Young reality TV version.

Harumph. Hank Pym has no business calling anybody names...not after the crap that he's pulled. He's practically the poster child for unbalanced after all.

This whole registration act is getting completely out of control now.

kelvingreen: Alright, that's three! We're halfway to having a team!

sallyp: Yeah, Marvel has yet to convince me the Pro-Reg side was "right" or that they're being balanced on this.

Heck, the Initiative even has the stereotypical "old scientist with german accent that was probably a Nazi" working for them. EEEEVIL!

Eh, why not.
I'm in.

This is a very cool blog! I haven't really read comics regularly for a few years, but the idea behind "Civil War" seemed interesting so I thought I'd get back in. A smart Marvel-centric blog like this is an awesome resource for that.

I haven't read all the Civil War tie-ins, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I don't get "The Initiative" at all. What's the point of having a Super Team for every state? Do Rhode Island and Wyoming really need their own version of the Avengers? I mean if Alpha Flight was enough to guard all of Canada safe, and Excalibur kept the UK safe even as they bounced between worlds and stuff, why do you need a whole team to defend Iowa? And it's interesting that it's a Fifty State Initiative -- who defends DC?

I could kind of understand going back to the regional Avengers teams. It will be cool to see a setting other than NYC for a change. But I don't really get the point of this.

Also: is "New Avengers" any good? The lineup seems cool, but there's a disturbing lack of online commentary about it. What would you guys advise someone trying to get back into the mainstream Marvel Universe to buy?

i kow i know i pop in all creepy like from time to time hahahaha but dude your blog owns (does anyone even say owns anymore??)

civil war thoughts:
after dissasemble they launched that "new " avengers...i was reading issue 3 cap and tony share a bagle and talk about how fate brought the hereos together on the raft..the impression i got ..and you can see it alot in busieks (sp??) run that tony idolized cap...in issue 3 tony clearly states"ive been known to go with steve about things because hes gut is allways right" maybe not that exact wording but somehting along those lines..so tony goes with caps gut...so what happend durring civil war?? the only thing i can rationalize is tony thought that no matter what this was going down..nothing he did would change that..so instead of fighting it he put himself in a spot to be in charge of it all....better him than some goverment stoodge...i think he should have fought the goverment if you think about it they could have gone on strike as some galactus type came to destroy the city..im sure the goverment would have shushed..but hey they needed a reason to get it going...but thats how im looking at tony now..as aif its not me it would something worse...but i think what would be good coming up is how the registered supes now are goverment...meaning if the say to go attack another country the reg supes best go along or be deemed a traitor..i think when they get to that point things will get really intresting..especialy when tony realizes that his armour is bein used to take over another country or forced to put a dictator in charge due to goverment politics...orrr when thor comes back..when kang almost over took the world he told the un about threats that only he could stop..then cap got taking over by those russian radioactive dudes and thor though cap died and went nutso..big time...so when thor comes back hes going to bust heads.
and im rambling now huh? hahahaha
so yeah it was weird how tony would follow cap into the gates of hell then turn on him..but again he had to because if not him..someone else...at least now he has control.

have a good weekend

anonymous: That's four! And we can have an arc called "Who Is Anonymous?", and then when that's done, we'll put someone else in your identity, you'll just be yourself, and we can do it again!

nothing stops the blob: I'll admit, I can't really figure a good reason for teams in every state. Maybe they figure every state has something to deal with that having super-heroes could help with (like tornados, floods, etc.). If I was the pssimistic sort, I'd suggest that the Marvel gov't is under the coontrol of the Red Skull, and he's planning to establish a dictatorship and use these heroes to enforce his will, but I don't that's it either.

As for books to look into, you probably try either of the Avengers books, Might or New. They're written by the same fellow, but I think he'll go for different tones, seeing as one side is outlaws and mostly street-level (New Avengers), and the other is serious powerhouses and legal (mighty). Ed Brubaker is a pretty good writer, he's currently working on Captain America, Daredevil, Iron Fist, and Uncanny X-Men, but he likes to build things up slowly, so I tink those depend on how patient you are.

I'll pose this as a question to my readers today, and see if they have any suggestions.

gabesummers: Well, i still say owns, but I always out of touch with the latest trends. I totally agree with your reason for why Tony made the decision he did. He pretty much told Spidey he wasn't going to go along with it, because it was going to happen, no stopping it. And I'm with you, what happens when the U.S. decides to attack wakanda, are all the heroes that like Storm and the Panther going to go along with that?

Of course, if the Hulk shows up and kills everyone in World War Hulk, I guess it would be a moot point.

thekelvingreen said...

Of course the Pro-Reg side was right, Quesada said so!

What more do you want? Don't tell me that you actually wanted this kind of stuff explored in the actual comics! What a ridiculous suggestion!

Forget about the Hulk beating everybody up.

Soon, Nova will return to earth and there will hopefully be heck to pay for all the New Warriors hating that's going on these days!

I still miss Namorita.

CalvinPitt said...

kelvingreen: Of course, how absurd of me. Exposition and plot development are for sissies.

fortress keeper: I miss namorita too. All of the hard-charging butt-kicking of Namor, with considerably less of the haughty attitude.

Exposition and plot development? A Quesada craves not these things -- nor is he intellectually capable of doing either :)

No, Initiative is an awful book, and so much for "accountability." More people have been killed in the execution of the SRA than before it!

And anytime Pym speaks, someone should mention Ultron, or smacking Jan (although this trump card has been done to death). That should take the wind out of his sails.

Take it and run.
