I have to admit a fondness for the suit. It made sense to me when thinking of Ock as a villain. He's got metal arms that obey his every command, so he shouldn't have to worry about getting dirty. Plus, the suit can distinguish him as a man of some sophistication, not another mindless super-goon like the Rhino or Electro.
On the other hand, Octavius is a man of science, so he probably isn't adverse to getting a little dirty if needed. For some reason, I associate the green-and-orange look with his more personal, revenge-related schemes, and the suit with his bigger aspirations. Probably because the first few times I saw him in the suit, he was leading the Sinister Six on some plan to control the world.
So, I throw it open to you. Which look do you prefer? Why? Is there another get-up you like more than either of these?

I tend to agree that the two costumes represent different approaches. I think the suit is when he's playing the supervillain leader, or wooing Aunt May. The green-and-orange is for when he's ready to mix it up.
Do you think he uses the arms to tailor his own clothes?
I prefer the green and orange. For myself, it's iconic of the character and while the suit worked later on, I identify Dr. Octopus more in this costume. It's one of those things I don't question, no matter how little sense it might make.
I always love super-heroes and villains performing daily chores. Otto's sitting on the couch eating a sandwich while his arms are doing the dishes, ironing his suit and stitching a hole in his tights.
I associate the green-and-orange with the period when Doc Ock was kinda fatter, and receiving increasingly severe beatings from Spider-Man. Like when Ock used to freeze up catatonic at the sight of him.
The suit gives the impression that Ock's back on track, taking care of business and himself. I say this as someone who wears his suit like once in a month of Sundays...
Let's face facts, there is no way that you are not going to look completely ridiculous with four metal arms coming out of your back, no matter WHAT you wear. That said, I think that the suit is certainly more dapper, and also helps hide his unfortunate tendancy towards puppy fat. However, it probably wouldn't be particularly efficient in a fight...and nobody wants to see torn armholes and such. So, for fighting, the old green and orange.
The suit is very "Kingpin", so it projects more of an image of power than the green jumpsuit, which projects an image of "circus act".
I dunno. The elements I want to see in my Doc Ock are: tentacles, stupid hair, crazy lab goggles/Matrixed-out sunglasses. To me, that's all it takes to get to the iconic look.
I have to say, I LOVE Spidey's old school rogues gallery, back before he was routinely fighting worldwide threats and Crazy Warped Identity Issues. Doc Ock, Electro, The Rhino, even the Vulture. If the current titles were to go back to him fighting the Sinister Six to prevent, I dunno, bank robberies, I would be very happy.
tom the bomb: I had never really pictured Ock making his own outfits, though I could see him maybe patching them up.
Maybe he goes to that tailor JMS introduced?
jim: I'd like to see Ock doing some of the everyday things you described. Seems like everytime I saw him, he'd be talking on the phone while the arms mixed dangerous chemicals.
googum: I think the girth is what bugged me about the spandex. After a while he looked like and green-and-orange bowling ball. Which isn't out of the question, since he's got the arms to do everything, but always bothered me somehow.
sallyp: Blast you, with your practical reasoning on the usefulness of spandex!
nothingstopstheblob: I'd also like to see Spidey fight some arch-foes who are just trying to look out for #1, instead of always swearing revenge on the web-slinger.
Well, Larsen's rational for the white suit was that a fat dude like Ock wouldn't wear skintight green. Which... sounds like it makes sense. In his initial appearances, he wore what looked like a modified lab outfit.
I like the white suite and the movie inspired Matrix outfit.
dan coyle: Yeah, Ock in spandex was rarely pretty. The black trenchcoat was cool, but I always thought the slicked back hair was odd.
I do think the suit is better, although the first comics I read had the green spandex Ock. I don't mind the trenchcoat version, but I think Ramos' redesign of the Goblin was much more successful.
