A Hellboy Thought

I was watching Hellboy over the weekend. At the end of the movie, after he's killed the Rasputin, and the monster that emerged from Rasputin, he goes back to Liz, whose soul was stolen away by Rasputin. Hellboy whispers in her ear and hey, she's back among the living! Liz asks what he said, and he tells her he said (paraphrasing) they'd better give her back, because for her he'd cross over and then they'll be sorry.

Except there's thing pause as he's speaking, before the part about crossing over and making them sorry. I'm not well-versed in the Hellboyverse, but the movies taught me he was supposed to bring about Hell on Earth. That's what Rasputin wanted him for, and in The Golden Army, that angel (or whatever it was) that cured him told Liz she'd be consigning the Earth to such a fate if she had Hellboy saved. So I wonder if he didn't say something different. A promise to those forces to carry out their wishes - after Liz has passed away. She's mortal, albeit superhuman, he isn't. Assuming he doesn't get wasted in battle, he ought to outlive her, and maybe he won't care so much what happens after that.

Or it could be a bait-and-switch. He gets her soul back, reneges on the deal later. Or lets them into our world, then immediately kicks their butts back out. Hey, he helped them take over, but he may never have said for how long. Malevolent, other-dimensional forces engage in such chicanery with mortals all the time. It'd be only fair for them to get all little back.

Strange I'd seen Hellboy a couple of times before, but that idea never occurred to me until now.
