Half-Baked (1998)

Three stoners try to raise bail money for their friend after he kills a police horse by feeding it a bunch of junk food. I mean, come on, Kenny's supposed to be kindergarten teacher. Hasn't he gone over what horses eat with the kids? It's not Funyuns!

I'm actually not sure I've ever eaten a Funyun.

The movie does a lot of jokes about how Kenny is very worried about being raped while he's in prison, and whether the Squirrel Master (Tommy Chong) protecting him is going to be released before Kenny gets out of there, taking away his protector. That part is. . .not great, but since the movie forgets about him a lot, you only have to deal with it periodically. Appropriate, given what the movie says smoking lots of weed does for your memory.

A lot more time is spent on Thurgood's (Dave Chappelle) relationship with Mary Jane. Both the lady he met named Mary Jane (Rachel True), and the plant, which she hates. So he and his buddies are dealing weed he steals from the pharmaceutical company where he works as a janitor, while he tells her he's got nothing to do with weed whatsoever. Hates the stuff. Undercut by Scarface and Brian constantly talking about smoking weed.

Also, she has a really boring apartment. Interesting contrast between her place and the guys, which has very worn furniture and stuff all over the place, while hers is very orderly with immaculate walls and furniture that looks like it's never been used. The parts where she's peering through the peephole at Thurgood as he promises to stop smoking, it makes the halls of her building look narrow and oddly angled. Like he's caught in some weird funhouse or maze.

Jim Breuer plays Brian as too stoned, honestly. He's always so goofy and out of it, I'd think it's just how he is, and nothing to do with the drugs. Which could be an argument to make, not everyone who acts like is high, but I don't think that's what the movie's going for.

I laughed hardest when the scientist at the lab asks "Janitor" (because of course he never bothered to learn Thurgood's name) to run something to supply for him. Thurgood agrees, while calling the guy "Scientist", then hands him the mop and asks him to finish cleaning up in here. It's either that, or all the cameos. Steven Wright as the guy who just lives on their couch, Jon Stewart as the Enhancement Smoker who insists you have to watch Scent of a Woman while high.
