Big Green Versus, Uh, Bigger Green

We know that Hulk will soon fight Fin Fang Foom in a one-shot being released in December, I think (and if you didn't know that, well, now you do. You're welcome.) But that upcoming bout has lead me to think of a different potential battle.

Hulk versus Godzilla.

Has it happened? If so, what happened?

If it hasn't happened, and it did, what would be the result? Would it take place on the Pacific Rim, or in the American Southwest? Would the Leader be behind it, or some stupid aliens, or would it just be a misunderstanding battle? How much property damage would there be? Would Thunderbolt Ross waste time and taxpayer dollars firing ineffective missiles at Hulk, or Godzilla?

Does Godzilla have a friend who could engage Rick Jones in a musical face-off?

Basically any thoughts you have about such a conflict, drop 'em in the comments.

Godzilla has faced off again Hercules (when he was with the Champions), The Thing (and the rest of the FF), The Avengers (complete with the Thor/Cap/IM trio), but never against the Hulk.

In fact his main Marvel Enemy was Dum Dum Dugan and his terrifying 'stache.

Godzilla really doesn't do that much for me, but I will be rooting for Fin Fang Foom all the way, baby!

mallet!: I keep trying to come up with some witty comment about how Godzilla hates men with odd facial hair, or Dugan has it in for giant lizards from his days in the circus, but I just can't think of anything.

But it is good to know Godzilla is an equal opportunity Marvel adversary.

sallyp: Damn right. Hulk stole the "purple pants" shtick from Fin Fang Foom, and there will be a reckoning.

Remembering the Marvel Godzilla comics with a kind of wacky nostalgia, I would LOVE to see the Hulk and "Gojira" go at it. The Hulk being stomped into the ground, Godzilla walking away, believing the job done, only to have ol' Greenskin jump up and hit him right between the eyes...., literally! Or, maybe Godzilla actually SWALLOWS the Hulk, only to have ol' Jade Jaws cause such wanton indigestion that he spits him out in a belch of atomic flame. Even more interesting, however, could be the conflict going on behind the scenes. In my mind, this would be a period piece, taking place in the late '70's, and so you'd have General "Thunderbolt" Ross of the U.S. Army going nose-to-nose with Dum-Dum Dugan to establish jurisdiction over the whole mess. Moments like that (all penciled by Herb Trimpe, of course) would be comics magic!

Another great moment:

At the Pheonix con last year I was in a booth across from the artist alley when a kid came up to one of the artists and asked:

"Can you draw me Godzilla vs. The Punisher."

Which is everything good about comics in ONE SENTANCE.

mark: Now that's what I'm talking about. You make it all sound so awesome.

mallet: That is great. I can picture Frank thinking, "I'm gonna need a bigger gun."

In a letters column from the Godzilla comic, Marvel did do a tongue-in-cheek battle with the Hulk. Well, it was one panel, with Godzilla unconcernedly walking off and a stomped speck saying (I'm paraphrasing here) "Just wait till Hulk get out of ground, frog face, then Hulk will smash you!"
