Sunday Splash Page #13

"Different Wendigo", in Amazing Spider-Man #277, by Charles Vess (writer/artist), Elaine Lee (colorist), Rick Parker (letterer)

Not really representative of the DeFalco/Frenz run on Amazing Spider-Man, but it was too cool of an image to pass up. Issue 277 was split between two stories, the first dealing with the fallout of Flash Thompson being exposed as the Hobgoblin (not really), plus Peter getting a call from Matt Murdock (about halfway through the Born Again storyline), and going to impotently confront the Kingpin about it. That's more what this run is like. Lots of dialogue, lots of spinning plates, relationship drama, money problems for Peter. The classic Spider-Man template, basically.

This is the era I was introduced to Spider-Man comics. With a Secret Wars II tie-in of all things. The Puma trying to get Spider-Man to help him kill the Beyonder, which Spidey dismisses as a ludicrous notion.

But there were also some lasting effects. The alien costume that later formed half of Venom. Mary Jane figuring out Peter was Spider-Man (or finally revealing she's known for a long time, depending on what stories you're counting). So that during much of this period, the two of them are in a cautious friendship (the issue where they walk in the park and MJ details her difficult childhood is a pretty good one). Eventually the mystery of the Hobgoblin's identity was revealed, although that got retconned later. Harry Osborn and Liz Allan have a son, and find themselves targets of the Hobgoblin, which is a problem they could both do without. The Sinister Syndicate made its first appearance (I enjoy lower-tier villains getting together to make more cash), as well as Silver Sable and the Puma. And the run had some of Sandman's early steps towards becoming a good guy. Which didn't last, but that's how it goes sometimes.
