They Can't Be All Bad

Was there ever a good Dire Wraith?

I was looking at Chris Sims' post from yesterday, showing Rom destroying a Dire Wraith disguised as a hooker(?!), and in the comments, Chris mentions that the Wraiths were conveniently all evil, making it OK for Rom and his Spaceknight cohorts to eradicate an entire sentient species, something that is normally frowned upon when the Skrulls or Badoon try it on humans.

In the way that my mind usually does, it recalled some discussion in the comments of a post (which one I can't recall) over at Pretty, Fuzzy Paradise that was talking about how Miss Martian is an example of the One Good Member of the alien race, in this case the White Martians, typically introduced so as to demonstrate that the writers aren't saying the entire species is evil, as that would come off a bit racist.

Which is what got me wondering if there had ever been a Dire Wraith that, through its words and deeds, wasn't considered to be evil and in need of death. I've only really seen them in one Uncanny X-Men story, and given they seemed to be trying to steal the X-Men's bodies, it wasn't a very positive view. Granted, it was starting to snow, and they don't do well in the cold, and so maybe they just wanted to stay warm, but I remember one telling Forge they wouldn't stop until they'd taken over the planet, so yeah, not a real friendly showing.

Actually, there was one good Dire Wraith- in Rom #25, there was a backup story by Punisher and Damned scribe Steven Grant and Flash penciler Greg LaRocque about Rom confronting a group of DWs. One of them had married and actually liked his wife and raising her son.

The DW struggles with his love for his wife versus his duty and nature as a Wraith, and at the end of the story helps Rom defeat the cell of Wraiths he belongs to. He surrenders to Rom, and Rom uses the Analyzer on him. Rom says he's not human, but he's not a Wraith anymore either, and flies away.

The Wraith's human wife says she needs some time alone to think, and the story ends with the Wraith contemptlating the possible end of his relationship, and realizing it's all part of being human.

Other than that though, the Dire Wraiths were generally more badass than every other alien race in the MU.

You should try to track down some ROM if possible.

There was one nice Quardian once. Of course Lobo killed him, but hey, it CAN happen.

dan: So the One Good Alien Rule comes through again!

fortress: I probably should. I own two issues, the last one (#75), and one where he fought the Mad Thinker and his Awesome Android (who wound up not taking kindly to M.T.'s plan to replace him with what he believed was a robot).

sallyp: And another example comes forth! It's kind of weird that's there's always that one nice member of the species.
